Homestead Playhouse Stages One Spring Production Each Year

September 17, 2026

For years, raising kids in DC Ranch meant two dates on the family calendar had nothing to do with school or sports. One was an autumn show at the Homestead Community Center. The other was a matching production the following spring. Both were staged by the neighborhood's own children's theater program, cast entirely with local kids and directed by a guest director brought in from around the Valley for that one show. Nobody left DC Ranch to see it, and nobody left DC Ranch to be in it.

That two-show rhythm is gone. According to the program's current FAQ on DC Ranch's own community site, the Homestead Playhouse now stages one production a year, in the spring. The fall show, once a fixture of the calendar, is no longer listed in the description of how the program runs.

What the Calendar Used to Look Like

This wasn't always the model. Community write-ups from earlier years describe the Playhouse running on a fall-and-spring cadence, with a full production each season rather than one. One archived post names Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr. as that year's fall show. Another names Shrek the Musical Jr. as a spring production. Different posts, same underlying pattern: a fall show and a spring show, each a separate full production, long enough that families built it into how they thought about the calendar at the Homestead Community Center.

What the FAQ Says Now

The program's current FAQ answers the question directly: "The Homestead Playhouse will produce one production in the spring." Beyond the schedule, the FAQ lays out practical details families may want to know:

The mechanics around that single production haven't changed much from what longtime families would remember:

  • Minimum age to audition is 8, with the primary age range running 9 to 12
  • The Playhouse does not double-cast, so most roles go to one performer rather than splitting a part across two casts
  • A different director is invited in for each show, chosen from around the Valley, and casts the production independently
  • Auditions carry real odds. The FAQ itself walks through a scenario where 70 kids try out for 30 available parts, meaning 40 kids won't be cast that season
  • Recent productions have run with a cast of about 35 youth performers

What did survive from the old fall slot is instructional rather than a full staged show. The FAQ describes summer and fall programming built around week-long camps that teach performance skills, distinct from the spring production itself. For a family used to a full fall play, that's the same season doing different work now.

Three Consecutive Springs, No Fall in Between

The production history backs up the shift better than the FAQ language alone does. Beauty and the Beast Jr. ran as the spring 2024 show. The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition followed in spring 2025, billed on DC Ranch's event page as the Playhouse's 36th production. Annie Jr. was the spring 2026 production, with tickets going on sale in early April and performances running from April 30 through May 3.

Three consecutive springs. No fall production listed for any of those years. That's not a single skipped season. It's a pattern that matches what the FAQ now states as the standing model.

The Homestead Playhouse is proud to present its 36th production.

That line, describing the Wizard of Oz staging, is worth sitting with. Thirty-six productions is a long run for a resident-cast children's theater program housed inside a private community's own facility. The number says the Playhouse has real institutional memory in DC Ranch, even as the shape of its season has changed.

What This Means If You Have a Kid Who Wants In

If your household is used to circling a fall audition date, that specific event isn't on the current calendar. The spring production is now the one production, and based on the last three years, ticket sales tend to open in early April with performances running into early May.

Tickets have held steady at $18 for adults and $12 for youth 12 and under across the recent productions. All performances are held at the Homestead Community Center at 18600 N. 98th Street, the same building that also houses the splash pad, adventure playground, and basketball courts residents use year round, though the splash pad itself is switched off from December through February.

For families weighing whether to try out, the FAQ's own framing is worth passing along honestly. Not every child who auditions gets cast, and the program says so plainly rather than softening it. For a 9 or 10 year old trying out for the first time, that's useful to know going in. For more information on auditions or casting, DC Ranch's Playhouse contact is Lindsay Vanegas.

Why a Detail This Small Is Worth Knowing

A children's theater program cutting its season from two shows to one isn't the kind of change that shows up in a listing description or a homeowners association newsletter roundup. It shows up only if you're paying attention to how a specific amenity, in a specific building, has actually behaved over a specific run of years. That's the kind of texture that separates a neighborhood you've toured from a neighborhood you've lived in.

DC Ranch residents who've had a kid in one of these productions, or who've bought a ticket to sit in the audience at the Homestead Community Center, already know the Playhouse as one of the small, specific things that makes this particular community feel like a place rather than a listing. For anyone weighing a move within DC Ranch, or comparing it against another North Scottsdale community, that kind of detail is often more telling than square footage.
